First Medal at London 2012 for Czech Republic

Vavrinec Hradilek won the silver medal in the men’s K1 slalom Kayak to give the Czech Republic its first medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Hradilek came second behind Italian Daniele Molmenti who was celebrating his 28th birthday today. The bronze went to Germany’s Hannes Aigner.

According to UK Eurosport, after the race Hradilek told reporters “I didn’t realise we have had no medals so I did not put pressure on myself,” and “I hope I inspire other Czech athletes.”

Hradilek also finished second to Molmenti in the 2010 world championships.
